Bunions

What is a bunion?
A bunion is a structural and positional deformity of the great toe and first metatarsal. Most people notice a large bump at the joint behind their great toe associated with the great toe leaning toward the 2nd toe.

Did my tight shoes cause the bunion?
Tight shoes may irritate the bunion or speed up its progression, but typically tight shoes do not cause the bunion. Bunions generally are hereditary. An individual that inherits a flatter, more flexible foot is prone to a bunion. Certainly arthritis, neuromuscular conditions, or even trauma could also cause a bunion.

Is surgery my only option for bunion treatment?
A bunion is a structural deformity, and therefore can only be corrected surgically, but if you cannot fit surgery into your lifestyle at this time various treatment do exist to reduce symptoms. Some of the treatments include custom orthotics, anti-inflammatory medication, injection therapy, shoe modification, or even physical therapy.

How is my bunion corrected surgically?
Our foot surgeons evaluate your foot and radiographs to determine what procedure would procedure would be best for you. Generally the procedure takes about an hour and involves repositioning the 1st metatarsal bone as well as the great toe. The bone is held in place with surgical pins, or screws which allow the bone to heal. The surgery is generally done at an out patient surgical facility.
